According to the study, triple-vaccinated people suffered an average of 4.4 days of Omikron symptoms.
The delta variant has long been known to cause far more severe disease than omicron. British scientists have succeeded in quantifying exactly how many days vaccinated people experience symptoms after being infected with the mutants.
Fully vaccinated and boostered people suffer from symptoms in a corona infection with the omicron variant on average three days shorter than in conditions with the delta variant. Omicron infection is also associated with a significantly lower risk of losing the sense of smell than Delta, according to a British study published in the journal The Lancet.
The authors used ZOE data from a free smartphone app for their study. More than 63,000 Britons aged 16 to 99 who had already been vaccinated before their infection described their covid symptoms between June 2021 and January 2022. Among people with complete Corona vaccination and booster doses, symptoms lasted an average of 4.4 days with Omicron infection. In contrast, for Delta, symptoms lasted 7.7 days, or 3.3 days longer, in this group.
The difference was not as significant in those fully vaccinated without a booster dose. This group suffered symptoms for 8.3 days with omicron infection, compared with 9.6 days with delta. The study authors wrote that the faster recovery from omicron infection suggests “that the period of infectivity may be shorter,” the study authors wrote. This would have implications for “workplace health rules and government health guidance documents.”
The nature of symptoms also varies depending on the variant of the virus. When infected with the Delta variant, which was dominant last year, 53 percent of vaccinated ZOE app users said they lost their sense of smell. For the Omikron variant, only 17 percent suffered. However, the risk of sore throat was increased by 55 percent with Omikron, and a hoarse voice was 24 percent more likely with Omikron than with Delta, according to the study.
Omikron causes fewer serious illnesses.
On the other hand, according to the study, serious infections were significantly less likely with Omikron: vaccinated patients with an Omikron infection were 25 percent less likely to be hospitalized than vaccinated Delta patients. The study thus supports the assumption that Omikron causes less severe illness because of a higher vaccination rate in the population and the properties of the virus variant itself.
What can be expected from Omikron XE?
Study author Cristina Menni of King’s College London highlighted that this was the first peer-reviewed study with many participants to look at differences in symptoms according to corona variant.
The data evaluated were from when the BA.1 subtype of omicron predominated rather than the BA.2 subtype, as is the case today. However, recent data from the ZOE app did not indicate differences between BA.2 and BA.1 in terms of symptoms, Menni said.
